Nothing to comment other than my complete agreement.

If you feel compelled to read the works of a non-feminist (or anti-feminist), there are much better choices than Sarah Vine.

Were you reading Phyllis Schlafly back in the 80’s and 90’s? If so, you’re sort of stuck in the same dead end loop with Sarah Vine.

Her column was just something I came upon on the DM’s website. I read it and thought her wrong enough to merit a Page explaining why I think she’s wrong.

The average age of menarche is something like 12 1/2 so there are a fair number of girls who are biologically, if not mentally, sexually mature at 11. This presents a number of issues, but they aren’t going to be solved by ignorance. No one is suggesting that 6th graders be shown graphic films, but they need facts.

I don’t know anything about Sarah Vine, but if she can’t see the difference between providing useful information, and pressuring and/or scaring kids, then I feel for her kids. With a 5 year old, you need to warn them not to cross the street without looking both ways and not to go with strangers. You don’t show pictures of mangled victims, you tell them they could get hurt, and you love them too much to want that to happen. With pre-teens, you educate about their biology and warn against abuse, because you love them more than anything else.
Ignorance doesn’t provide any guarantee that they won’t be taken advantage of.

Nothing bad happened to me. But it wasn’t because of the elliptical warnings I got back when. My innocence and my ignorance were both perfectly preserved by those too-delicate phrasings.

Which means that luck was with you. But luck isn’t an education strategy.
